Are you a Disney fan? Then this article is just for you. Once upon a time is a series that has almost all of Disney heroes and villains. But… With a twist! In-fact with lots of twists and turns. What kind of twist you ask? Well… Let’s continue while I try to unfold a few for you…
The story starts in a small town called Storybrook. Weird name… Isn’t it? But there is a reason it has a name like this. This town has almost all the characters from storybooks or Disney movies based on it. The story starts with a little boy, 10-11 of age, named Henry knocking the door of a young single woman named Emma Swan. He tells her, he comes from a place called Storybrook, and that she is his mother. Oh, boy! What???!!! Anyway, so he tries to convince her to come with him to storybrooke as storybrooke is under some curse put by an evil villain, and she is the only one who can break it.
Coming to Storybrook
So, this boy Henry believes that everything written in the book that Emma is holding in the picture is true, and that they are all fairy tale characters. The town has gone under someone’s curse and everyone has forgotten who they were, and where they come from. So what this curse did was… Gave everyone new memories of modern living away from their enchanted land. The town also has a protection spell due to which non-fairy tale characters cannot enter the town.
Say what now? Then how is Emma supposed to enter Storybrook? Just because she is with Henry? But then what about the “should be from a fairy tale” thing? Warning!!! I am about to drop a major spoiler! Emma is actually a fairy take character. Never heard of her? Well, there’s a first time for everything. So Emma is in fact Snow White and Prince Charming’s daughter.
Evil Queen, Regina is the mayor of the town and no one including her remembers their true identity. Except for Henry. Snow is a teacher at Henry’s school, and she is the one who gives him the storybook to comfort him when he was feeling lonely, as his mother being the mayor was always busy. But she loves him dearly nonetheless. So, throughout the first season, Henry keeps on trying to make people believe the storybook and bring their memory back, but needless to say, no one believes him and thinks the child needs help.
The end? Or a New Beginning?
Towards the end of first season, Regina gains her memory and starts trying to eliminate Emma Swan as she thinks that Emma is taking Henry away from her. So, she makes Emma a poison lasagna. Henry tries to warm Emma that Regina is the evil queen and she has poisoned her lasagna, but she does not listen. So to prove himself right, Henry takes a bite of the lasagna and faints. He is admitted to the hospital and as Emma kisses his forehead, the curse is broken, and everyone remembers their true identity, which forms the base of other seasons to come.
The thing that I love the most about this series is that, it changes everything we knew or believed as children, while reading these fairy tales or watching them. The series shows a different perspective of the Disney heroes and villains. Or the situations which changes them for the better or worse.
The backstory we deserve
Ever wondered about the back story of a villain? What made them so? Or were they always like this? This series answers all those questions. Here, you get to why each villain became a villain. The mistreatments they received to get so cold-hearted from initially a kind heart is portrayed very well. Also, this series teaches that everyone deserves a second chance. People can change. We just need to see the good in others. Maybe, trying to see the perspective of others can make us understand them a little better. Well, enough about righteousness. There are other things as well that makes this series amazing.
With so many Disney heroes and villains, and so many twists and turns, binding every character together, this series keeps you wanting to watch more. Like, just as Regina, the evil queen starts to turn good, Zelena, the wicked witch turns up, who by the way, is Regina’s sister. From trying to destroy the town, to what made her evil, to a change of heart, every question is answered in this series. And not just her, but many more. Yet not convinced if you should watch it? Then read on…
Ever read Disney fan theories connecting various stories of Disney movies wanted to see it in action? Then go ahead and watch Once Upon A Time. What is great about this series is that, it is not just different characters of Disney movies connected to each other through various links, but it also has variations of those characters. Like, the image you see of Rapunzel above is one Rapunzel, the one more in common with traditional Rapunzel. And the image you see below is another Rapunzel, different from the traditional one.
It’s not just Rapunzel who has two variants of her character. Cinderella also has two Variants. And each has their own story. The picture below shows the two of them.
Come on now! At least now you gotta be curious. So go ahead and watch it!!!
