The Dark Knight
2008 ‧ Action/Adventure
The Dark knight is an absolute masterpiece by the director. It’s one of the top superhero films, giving full justice to batman fans. The movie is based on DC Comics and is 2nd installment of the Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy and sequel of 2005’s Batman begins. Nolan gave the comics not only full justice but provided fans with a new adventure.
Batman has been able to keep crime in control in Gotham city with the help of his allies Jim Gordon and DA Harvey Dent. When he thinks to return to his normal life leaving the city in hands of Dent his plan is interrupted by the chaos caused by the newly arising villain ‘JOKER’
JOKER suddenly intervenes in a mob meeting. He promises to kill Batman in exchange for a large sum of money stolen by Lao. In parallel, Batman brings Lao to Gotham helping Dent send 549 criminals in custody under RICO law. In response, Joker begins to kill people and promises to continue so until Batman reveals his identity.
Soon, Joker is held in custody but he escapes taking Lao with him. To escape he distracts Batman by putting Dent and Rachel’s life in danger. Dent is saved but his face his half-burnt. On the other side, Rachel was not so lucky and dies. Joker burns Lao with all the money he stole giving a strange laugh.
Again JOKER threats to burn down a hospital until Reese who knows batman identity is killed. While attempting to do so he locates Dent and manipulates him into seeking revenge for Rachel’s death. He burns down the hospital and escapes. Dent goes on a killing spree, killing all who are responsible for Rachel’s death including Maroni, Gordon, and his family. This is the moment where we see Dent becoming the famous batman villain two-face.
Later that night, Joker rigs two ferries with explosives, one contains civilians and the other contains criminals. Each ferry has a trigger for other ferries explosives. He promises to blow up both the ferries unless passenger’s of one ferry decides to blow other. Will the passengers do the selfish act? Will batman be able to save them both? What will be the fate of Gordon, Dent, and Joker?
The movie consists of some of the best superhero character performances. Along with some great action scenes that push the genre of comic-based films to new heights. Joker portrayed by Heath Ledger brought the character to life and gave it another level. Heath switched between a hilarious to a terrifying look at a prick of a second. Kudos!!! To his performance. This movie is Nolan’s best work until now.
2006 ‧ Thriller/Mystery
The Prestige is a psychological thriller released in 2006. It was released between Nolan’s Batman begins and dark Knight acting as refreshment for fans. The movie is full of shocking plots and twists that keep fans on the edge of their seats until the movie ends.
The movie is about two friends and magician partners whose friendship turns into a rivalry that further becomes a battle. The two-stage magicians Alfred Borden and Robert Angier are friends and partners. During an act performance, in an unfortunate accident, Angier’s wife Julia died by drowning in a water tank. Angier blames Borden for his wife’s death and the two split apart resulting in a rivalry.
Borden finds success with a trick that he calls “The transported man” where he enters a cabinet and re-emerges in another on the other side of the stage in second. Angier sees the trick and accepts it as the greatest trick ever seen but is unable to figure out how Borden did it. Angier engineer cutter insists that Borden uses a double but he dismisses the claim as too simple.
Angier finds his double Gerald Root and performs his version of the trick. His Imitation is a greater success but Angier is dissatisfied as he does not get the chance to gather applauses. In a need to know Borden’s secret, he tells his assistant Olivia to spy on him. Olivia betrays Angier and falls in love with Borden becoming his assistant.
Still not satisfied Angier travels to meet with Nikola Tesla believing that he has created a machine for Borden to create a double artificially. Eventually, Angier debuts the real transported man act and clones himself on stage every time he performs the act. Borden to know the mechanism of trick travels backstage to find out. He sees Angier falling in a water tank that is closed. He tries to help him but Angier dies and Borden is framed for Angier’s death.
On the day when Burden is to be hung, Lord Caldow comes to meet him. He is someone who Borden knows from his lifetime. To discover and know the further plot and truth about Angier, I insist you watch the movie.
The story is full of suspense that is wrapped one in another and is slowly released towards the end of the movie keeping the audiences intrigued. On one side you will see the rivalry between two friends and on another side between Edison and Tesla. The story is so interesting that I was not able to leave the screen for a second also. If you want your mind to be boggled you need to watch this movie.
2010 ‧ Thriller/Sci-fi
Can you dream inside a dream? Build a dream as you wish to? No one is capable of such but Nolan is. With his film Inception, Nolan proved that he is a master of modern cinema and can create any movie that plays with the audience’s mind.
The movie explores the concept of dream versus reality. Cobb is a thief who can steal secret information from his targets by entering their dreams. But he is filled with guilt and grief. Due to the death of his wife Mallorie “Mal”. His wife died because of an experiment gone wrong. Due to which Mal and cobb together are trapped in decades of limbo. Mal becomes so adsorbed in the dreams that she is no longer able to differentiate between dream and reality. In her mind waking world is just another layer she needs to kick herself out and she jumps out of a window which kills her.
Cobb is held responsible for the death of his wife. He is filled with guilt and has kept the sharpest memories of Mal locked in his mind. He is determined to go back to his children for whom he has to perform a difficult ‘inception’ for his client Saito. Due to his grief, Cobb alone is unable to do the task.
So, he hires and trains a dreamer Ariadne. Cobb along with his acquaintances enter the layers of dreamworld created by Ariadne. The main aim of their inception is to plant an idea in Fischer’s mind, completing which they succeed.
They will come back to reality by a sudden fall referred to as kicks that need to be synchronized in a different layer of dreams. Otherwise, they will be captured in limbo.
By mistake, Ariadne releases Mind Mal into the dream that becomes their biggest obstacle to complete their inception. Will they succeed and Cobb meets his children? Or they all will be stuck in a limbo….
This movie is an awesome sci-fi movie. In the first attempt, the movie is difficult to understand as the story plays with your mind. Visual effects in the movie are soo awesome that it appears like the plains are folding. The movie is a must-watch for sci-fi geeks.
There are many more Nolan’s movies like Interstellar, Memento, Dunkirk, and the whole batman trilogy that are a blockbuster and have left a footprint in the cinema world. But these three are definitely the show stopper.
