If you are a fan of thriller, sci-fi, time traveling, then Dark is the apt series for you. Everyone is raving about the series so much that Rotten Tomatoes have announced it as the Greatest Series in Netflix. They conducted a poll where Dark beat other mind-blowing series like Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders and Stranger Things securing 80% of the votes.
Dark: The Series
Created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Dark is a German thriller web-series airing on Dec 3, 2017. It is the first German original series to be streamed in Netflix and got huge acclaim and admiration from the audience. The series was first compared to the famous Stranger Things because of the common genre science fiction between them. The show garnered attention day by day which shocked even the producers of the show. The intricacy and complexity of the series is what grabbed the attention of the audience. Some viewers have even compared the series to the movies ‘Inception’ and ‘Interstellar’ as it is complicated to understand at first.
The cast of the show is complicated, to say the least. There are 3 different time periods in the show which leads to three different members playing the same character. Currently, the series have released 2 seasons consisting 18 episodes. The show has so far nominated 17 times and won 5 times in Germany. The overview of the series is that in a town called Winden in Germany, two children go missing and the life of 4 families get intertwined and twisted into unimaginable ways. The show actually is based on time-traveling and the main characters find a wormhole in a cave system under a nuclear power plant. Generally, in time-traveling shows or movies like Back to the Future, the changes in the past will lead to a different future but it is reversed in the Dark.
Recap Of Season 1:
In the series, it has been proved that time and time again, Future is what bring changes to the past. The series has a great relationship with the number 33. It signifies a lot. Like the age of Jesus was 33 and God was mentioned 33 times in the Bible and there are 3 timelines in the series that the characters go back and forth to. They are 1953, 1986 and 2019. The difference between the years is also 33! Do you think it’s a coincidence? I don’t for sure. The year 1986 played a huge role in the 1st season. Though the main characters were in 2019, the plot focused on 1986. Characters like Mikkel, Jonas, Noah and even the dog Gretchen time-travelled to 1986. The year the time-traveling machine was built was also 1986.
Recap Of Season 2:
There were many questions and twists in the season 1 so fans thought that the answers would be given in season 2. They were wrong! The show writers had other idea! There were even more kind-boggling surprises and questions in the second season. For starters we’ve got couple more years in the timeline 1921 and 2053 respectively. In season 2, we see the heartbreaking death of Martha right before young Jonas but the shocker is that Jonas is the one that killed her. The future Jonas has killed Martha to make young Jonas courageous to stand up for the apocalypse and harden himself for any more loss. The strangest thing is when a lookalike of Martha with different hair colour comes to Winden from alternate universe. This makes us wonder if all the characters who are dead alive in another universe.
We also see how Katharina escapes the apocalypse by crawling through the Sic Mundus door. Which timeline will she enter and could she rescue Mikkel who is stuck in 1986? Even if they both get home what changes would that bring out? are few of the questions we have after the cliffhanging final episode of season 2. The show producers have confirmed that season 3 will be the final season where all the questions will be answered per the satisfaction of fans. So about season 3!
“We will offer answers to the questions that our viewers have been asking and help untangle the story through time, It will be hard for us to walk away from those characters we have really grown fond of, but the beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning.”Co-Creators of Dark to The Hollywood Reporter
When Is Season 3 Getting Released?
An official date has not been announced yet but the fans believe that it might be June 27, 2020 as it is the day of apocalypse and it would make a nice return for the series. Though, there can be changes because of the corona pandemic.
What Is Going To Happen In Season 3?
As we have seen in season 2, Martha’s lookalike who has come from an alternate universe so we may find out how it would affect other characters and what other characters might turn up from these universes. We can also see which year did Katharina stumble upon while time-traveling. Most of all, we can see if young Jonas would be able to stop old Jonas(Adam) from destroying the universe by creating the apocalypse with Sic Mundus. There are so many questions left to be answered but we will be able to see that only after the release of season 3.
Who Are The Cast For Season 3?
There are so many cast members in Dark as every character has a child, teen, old version to themselves but some of the characters that are confirmed to appear in Season 3 are Louis Hofmann (young Jonas), Jordis Triebel (Katharina), Lisa Vicari (young Martha), Mark Waschke (old Noah), Andreas Pietschmann (middle-aged Jonas) and Lea van Acken (Silja, Elisabeth’s right-hand woman in 2052–2053). New cast members are Barbara Nusse, Hans Diehl, Jakob Diehl, Nina Kronjager, Sammy Scheuritzel and Axel Werner.
Dark has turned heads all over the world for the past two and a half years and it is no wonder it is gonna do it again. I suggest to watch all the 18 episodes again to refresh our memory so we can watch season 3 with much more clarity and knowledge. By this way, we can cure the blues for missing the series as well!
