The world you are living in right now might be looking like a ‘la-la land’. A happy place to live in. But sorry for the bummer!! There is a parallel world where everything is not as happy as it seems it’s dark, it’s grim, it’s evil.
A parallel universe is a place with ugly monstrous creatures who are desperate to get into your life, into the normal universe, cause damage to your loved ones’ surroundings making your life a living hell.
Stranger things are all about unveiling the ‘new world’ that is full of horrors and unusual creatures with amazing and different powers. The series has a number of strange events that make the fans mind boggle. Simplifying the series from the first episode is not an easy task. Evils from the parallel world of “upside-down” open in the real world. Demogorgon’s, tendrils, and the Flayed…..are causing HAVOC. And the main villain “The shadow monster” a.k.a “Mind Flayer”….adamant to control others and take over your normal life.
The story is set up in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s. The first season revolves around the mysterious abduction of Will Byres. Will and his friends Mike, Dustin and Lucas are playing the game of “Dungeons and Dragons” at Mike’s house. While cycling back to his home, Will is attacked by an unknown creature and is dragged to a parallel world known as “upside-down”.
Restless from his disappearance, Joyce tries to convince Chief Jim Hooper to look for him who is convinced otherwise that he will return on his own. Meanwhile, Will’s friends are also looking him in the forest that surrounds the road to his home. They find a girl with shaved head, in hospital gown and take her to Mike’s basement. They discover that she has psychokinetic abilities and telekinesis power and her name is eleven.
Will in the “upside-down” is desperately trying to contact his family, he tries to call them but is unable to talk to them. With the strange events occurring with the house’s electricity she is convinced that Will is trying to communicate with her. She sets up the fairy lights with alphabetic series written on the wall in order to get a message from Will and is threatened by the same monster who took Will.
Chief Jim Hopper, investigating Will’s abduction, his search leads him to National Laboratory and he becomes suspicious about the laboratories’ research. He breaks in the Dr. Martin’s laboratory and sees the gate of upside-down along with eleven’s room but is taken out by guards. Barb who is Nancy’s friend (Mike’s sister) is also abducted by the same monster from the party. Nancy observes the monster’s appearance in Jonathan’s photographs of the party and they both look around Hawkins for Will and Barb.
Will and his friends while looking for Will, notice that eleven is afraid of the laboratory and have been misguiding them from the whole time. This leads to fight between them. Following a number of events one- by one all the characters combine and try to save will.
Eleven is able to locate Will and Barb in the Upside-down without entering the dimension. She finds Barb dead and Will hidden. With the help of Eleven they save Will but at last. During a mishap again with monster Eleven uses all her energy to save her friends and disappear in thin air bidding them goodbye.
At the closing end of first season we see all the things have returned to normal. But alas, Will is seen coughing a slug-like creature in his sink and has a flashback of Upside Down.
Opening of the second season seems like all things have returned to normal but the town is still coming over the horrors of Demogorgon. Full mystery of Dr. Martin’s lab is still unknown.
For a few moments you will feel like all is normal but ‘no’ things are going to be worse in this season. Will experiences a number of episodes where he finds himself in the Upsidedown world. He observes a huge “shadow monster” covering his school, he replicates the image in his drawing.
We will also see, that Eleven is fine and is taken in care by Hopper who is trying to protect and hide her from Dr. Martin and his laboratory. On the other side, we see the entry of two new characters ‘Max’ and his brother ‘Billy’. Max becomes affectionate with Lucas and slowly becomes part of their friend’s group. Whereas Lucas is arrogant and has a playboy image.
Nancy feels guilty about Barb’s death and wants to help her parents’ who think she is still alive. With these events happening side by side, Will again suffers from an “episode” where he faces the shadow monster and is possessed by him.
After awakening from the episode he begins to act strangely, he draws a number of drawings which Joyce and Hopper figure out to be a network of veins. Hopper recognizes the place as the same pumpkin farm which was destroyed. He dug the ground and find tunnels leading to Upside-Down. He is trapped but is later saved by Bob and Joyce with the help of Will’s vision.
Soon, they figure out Will is possessed by the shadow monster and needs to be rescued. With the help of Eleven, the group rescues Will through a series of events, fighting Demogorgon’s. With all her power, Eleven closes the portal to upside down. There are a series of exciting events in the storyline that will leave the fans amazed.
The laboratory is shut down due to the article published by Nancy. Eleven is adopted by Hopper and named as Jane Hopper. The series closes with the students dancing in snowball at their school. Unknown that the shadow monster is still alive and towering over the school in upside down.
In this season, evil is all set to enter the real world and take over it. We see a budding intimate relationship between Mike and Eleven. The intimacy disturbs hopper which he shares with Joyce. Along with this we also see again the recurrence of strange occurrences in town.
We see a scene, where a crowd of rats is seen revolving around a storm and starts explode into pieces one after another. This scene itself gives the sense of upcoming danger the town has to suffer.
In this season the “shadow monster” a.ka. “Mind Slayer” is taking control over people’s minds one after another like Billy making an army of mind-controlled people known as “The flayer”. The monster is after Eleven and is trying to get control over the real world and also harm Eleven.
There are a number of occurrences of strange fleshy monsters that scare us along with the story but Eleven is there to save her friends. After a series of events that help to resolve the mystery of Flayers. Eleven accesses Billy’s memories to help him and finally finds her alone in the void at the Steelworks (rat mystery occurred).
She exists the void, only to find that she is alone. Billy uncovers the mystery about him and the Flayers. We see the Flayers, gathering at Steelworks and melting into goo to become one large spider monster. What will happen next? Will Eleven and her friends be saved?
How Mind Flayer is brought to life
The horrifying blood dripping, fleshy spider monster that has brought horrors to all on-screen is brought to life through a VFX process by the cast. A tweet posted by Netflix revealed that a creature is actually a man in a red spandex bodysuit and a big, shiny helmet.
Senior Effects supervisor Paul Graff revealed that it was actually funny to shoot the hospital scene of the creature. As, everything was silent and the man ran spreading his arms and screaming at the top of his lungs charging down the hallway. The monstrous effect of the creature is created with the help of VFX. The fleshy looks of the monster will actually give you horrors.

Origin of Mind Flayer
Mind Flayer is also known as the Shadow Monster. He is the main villain in Stranger Things who is seen to harm all and is sort of master of upside down. He has psychic abilities that let him take control of people’s minds. From the series, it is observed that he is after Eleven, his family, and friends.
In season 3 it can be observed that, he is trying to enter take over the world. He feeds rats and flayer’s with chemicals and melts them to puddles of biomass to create a new body for himself.
But his actual occurrence is still unknown.
It is speculated that he may be the “1st” experiment of Dr. Martin Brenner, number one. In the past years he may have developed his powers to such an extent, leading him to create a whole new world “Upside-Down”. And he is trapped in this dimension for these many years.
In the first season we see experiments going on Eleven where she is trying to travel far distances, which leads to the opening of a gate to upside-down.
Dr. Brenner’s intriguing nature to investigate this new world may directly correlate with his experiments on Number one. Mind Flayer has incredible power as he is able to control the mind of multiple people and have great psychic powers. This gives an indication that he may be number one from Hawkins’s lab.
Who has been going under a number of experiments to develop his mind power and may have developed to such an extent that he has created a whole new world. But all these are speculations and origin can only be known when the story unravels the truth. So, stay tuned to the upcoming seasons to uncover the mystery.
