There is an abundance of series available in English. Comedy, romance, thriller, action, you name it. Here is a series that is a mockumentary of one of the most horrifying beings- vampires. What We Do In The Shadows is an American comedy horror series. Created by Jemaine Clement, the show aired on March 7, 2019.
What We Do In The Shadows is the third film/series in the franchise. In 2014, a movie in the same name directed by Jemaine Clement was released. The film garnered acclaim and appreciation and earned over $7 million dollars. Here is a funny clip from the movie,
After the release of the film, Clement and co-creator Taiki Watiti wanted to create a sequel. But this time with Werewolves! The arch-enemy of vampires. First, it was going to be named as What We Do In The Moonlight but was later changed to We’re Wolves. For five years, there has not been any step toward the making of this movie. So finally, in May 2019, Waititi said that the film is in the talk but there is no time to make it and added that each of them is working on something different and it is difficult to find time. So I don’t think the sequel is not gonna happen. Even if it does, it’s gonna come after a long time.
Plot and Making Of What We Do In The Shadows:
In September 2016, Clement and Taikiki revealed that they have been working on a comedy series following the police officers in the movie, O’Leary and Minogue. The series named “Wellington Paranormal” aired on 11 July 2018. The show currently has two seasons and 13 episodes. The second series produced in the franchise is What We Do In The Shadows. On March 27, 2019 , the show aired its first season consisting of 10 episodes. The show producers revealed that Fright Night, Martin, The Lost Boys were influential for the series. On April 15, 2020, the second season of the show was released. Both the seasons have gotten amazing reviews and was ranked high in IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. The show is also renewed for a third season according to the announcement of FX on May 22, 2020.
Both the series and the movies basically have the same storyline and plot but as a series is prolonged, many new twists and stories are included. In the series, we see three traditional vampires namely Nadja, Nandor and Laszlo. Colin Robinson and Guillermo are the supporting characters in the series. The show is set in Staten Island and shows the regular life of these vampires and the struggle they face in the modern world. On asking about the series, Clement has said,
“We stay pretty basic ’70s/’80s vampire rules, with a little bit of ’30s. They can turn into bats. They can’t go in the sunlight; they don’t sparkle in the sun, they die. They have to be invited in; in a lot of literature vampires have to be invited into private buildings, but this is a documentary so it’s the real rules which means they have to be invited into any building.”
Cast and Characters:
The characters have their own background and characteristics as listed below,
Nandor played by Kayvan Novak is a 757 year old vampire who is a cleanliness freak and considers himself as the leader of the gang. As we have seen from many vampire movies that vampires can turn to bats, Nandor can also turn into a dog.
Laszlo Cravensworth played by Matt Berry is an English vampire. He was turned by his wife, Nadja and he sometimes dislikes Nandor’s leadership. He enjoys his hobbies of making music and sculptures. He can also transform into a bat but he must shout ‘Bat!’ whenever he wants to transform. He is a bi-sexual in the series.
Nadja played by Natasia Demetriou is a vampire married to Laszlo. She often sees the reincarnations of her former human lover Gregor and ends up decapitating him everytime. She has the ability to transform into a swarm of rats.
Guillermo played by Harvey Guillén is a human serving Nandor for ten years in the hope that he’ll turn him into a vampire. He wants to become like Armand, a fictional character which first inspired him to become a vampire. He learns that he is a descendant of a famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing and has the genes of hunting vampires in him as well.
Colin Robinson played by Mark Proksch is an energy vampire who is unlike any other vampires. He can go around in daylight, he can drain energy from humans as well as vampires from making them angry or bored. Other vampires hate him but have to endure him as he is the only one with a job and money.
Season 2 Of What We Do In The Shadows:
At the end of Season 1, we have seen that Nandor accidentally shocked and killed his only descendant. Laszlo and Nadja confront each other about decapitating Gregor/Jeff. Finally, Guillermo learns about his origin and he accidentally sprinkle holy water on Nandor which angers him. As a punishment Nandor says that he’ll turn Guillermo after one more year. Furiated Guillemo, cuts the vampire portraits with a garden knife.
In Season 2, we see the same cast along with some other new cast as well. Reputed Mark Hamil is joining along with witches, ghosts and what not. This season is particularly going to explore Guillermo’s character and his conflicting choices. Stefani Robinson, one of the writer and co-executive producer of the show has told IndieWire “Before all the vampire-killing stuff, I would like to explore Guillermo as a human being… He’s very much a person that lives in the present day with vampires and delving into his real world and how he balances the two, what lies he has to tell to his family.”
Here is a trailer of Season 2,
So far in Season 2, we have seen the vampires struggling with ghost infestation and Guillermo’s struggle to lead a double life. The fourth episode of Season 2, ‘The Curse’ is one of the funniest and thrilling episodes in the series. Though the vampires have lived in the world hundreds of years and have seen many predators, technology is still their biggest threat. Nandor receives an email from ‘Bloody Mary’ saying that if he doesn’t pass the mail to ten other people, he’ll be under a curse. This freaks out Nandor and everyone is scrambling around to find a solution. Though the mail is a hoax, everyone is believing it. We also see Guillermo tries to go vampire hunting with a bunch of wannabes and almost gets killed. He understands that he has to learn a lot.
We can expect this season as well to end with a cliffhanger as the show is renewed for a third season. So, let’s just go with the flow and watch how the immortal beings act like kids and stumble upon their ways.
