Shrek is a 2001 American animated comedy film based on the 1990 fairy tale picture book by the same name.
It stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy , Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow as the voices of the lead characters. Shrek is the name of the Ogre(Myres) and it is a story about him.
Ogres are green colored fairy tale creatures which are presumed to be dangerous and lethal by the common people,
As a result, they often isolate themselves from the rest of the world.
Shrek is an Ogre who lives in a Swamp which means he’s big and green and
he kills fish for his dinner with flatulence and dines by the light of a candle made of wax from his ear.
Shrek: The first movie plot
Shrek is a lonely Ogre who enjoys his time alone in his swamp and although he is not at all a dangerous Ogre, he still manages to scare away people to enjoy his time in solitude.
His life takes a turn when he finds his swamp filled with the fairy tale creatures, then he learns that they have been forcefully moved there by Lord Farquaad(the main antagonist of the first installment of the film).
Shrek sets off to meet Lord Farquaad, he finds out that Lord Farquaad is looking for a princess so that
he can marry her and be a true king; the princess he has chosen for himself is Princess Fiona. She is a princess from a kingdom called Far Far Away.
Shrek meets a talking donkey(Eddie Murphy) in the swamp, who tries to befriend him.
Shrek and the Donkey embark on a journey to rescue Princess Fiona who is locked away in highest room of the tallest tower in the dragon guarded castle.
He manages to rescue Fiona with donkey;
On his way back Fiona and Shrek start to have feelings for each other and in the climax of the movie it is revealed that Fiona turns into an Ogre after the sunset everyday and this spell will only be broken when she kisses the love of her life,
but it turns out that Fiona’s one true love is Shrek and without any hesitation she tells him the truth
and she turns into an Ogre permanently when she kisses her one true love,Shrek.
How is Shrek different
Shrek received much critical acclamation and amazing reviews and rewards and
as the result Shrek also touched everyone’s heart by being a different love story than the usual Fairy tale.
Like the same old plot of the damsels in distress, and Prince Charming rescuing the princess .
Shrek gives us something quite different and unique,
Shrek teaches us that Happily ever after is not just for the good looking and handsome and rich people, it is for everyone.
Everyone gets his or her happy endings irrespective of their looks and riches.
The second most important thing Shrek teaches us is that true love conquers it all and
if you have true and pure intentions then you will find the one you are looking for without any problems.
The third magnificent thing Shrek teaches us is that we should never judge a book by it’s cover, similarly how everyone should never judge people who are not attractive because on the in side they can have the most beautiful and polite hearts.
Just like Shrek, who is shown as the Ogre who likes to live in seclusion in the beginning befriends someone
and also falls in love with princess because of his good and kind heart.
She is a princess of the kingdom Far Far Away, she faces much opposition form her people for marrying Shrek in the second installment of the film.
Princess Fiona unlike other princess’ seems a independent girl who knows how to take care of herself, in the first part of the movie she is seen to have protected herself from the robbers in jungle, she knows quite some martial arts,
Shrek is awestruck after seeing Fiona’s fight.
Cast and Cinematography
Shrek has amazing voice overs by the brilliant artists and without the right performers providing the voices, the movie would not have been this great.
The four main lead Myers, Murphy, Diaz, and Lithgow – hit all the right notes,
whether it’s Shrek being all grumpy or the donkey being the kind of joker and cracking all kinds of wise jokes,
or Farquaad being a man of short stature or Fiona being the funky princess keeping a deep secret to herself.
The animation is generally superb, too, although it’s somehow too realistic at times,
not only the animation is real but some times it seems as if it is so similar to things we do in the real life.
So far, we’ve had Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After, some spinoff mini-films in Shrek the Halls, Scared Shrekless, Puss in Boots, as well as Shrek the Musical and all of them have had some amazing earnings.
Shrek rose from a simple children’s book character to viral internet sensation.
It faced acceptance quite quickly because it also deals with some of the real life problems like discrimination and marginalization.
Shrek is one of the greatest comedy creations of our time (or at least, the past two decades),
that is true without any doubt.
Personally speaking I watched Shrek when I was 11 years old and
to be honest it had moved me a lot back then,
it taught me how people who seem secluded can also be great friends and can be amazing people to have a company of,
The Dream Works Shrek is a complete challenge to the common Disney fairy tales and is also a complete package of social satire,
It also objects the common conventions and myths that people have in their minds
whereas it also satires the social real life problems like gender biasing, discrimination, and other sorts of prejudice.
Therefore Shrek is a complete package of comedy, satire, animation , true love and the story of the perfect Ogre we need.
