Racism is not new to America, there has been countless reports of black people being treated differently than white people. For example, if a black guy goes around the street after dark, he is immediately questioned. Sometimes, the police assaults them in fear that they might possess a weapon. These inhumane acts have been going on for a long time now and the death of George Floyd have made the whole world turn.
The Timeline Of The Incident:
On May 25th, George Floyd of Minneapolis was suffocated to death by a police officer Derek Chauvin. It is reported that Floyd used a $20 dollar counterfeit note and he was arrested by four police officers. While getting into the car, Floyd falls to the ground and three police officers sit on him while Chauvin presses his knee around Floyd’s neck. Bypasses have shot this on their phone which is going viral all over the world. Chauvin pressed down Floyd with his knee for about 9 minutes in which Floyd lost consciousness after 5 minutes itself.
The Aftermath Of The Incident:
‘I can’t breathe’ and ‘Don’t kill me’ were the last words of George Floyd. He was pronounced dead after he was taken to a hospital. On May 26th, the videos went viral and people started protesting to arrest the officers responsible for this incident. The four officers were dismissed from their job and on May 29, Chauvin was charged with a third degree murder. It is also speculated that both Floyd and Chauvin were bouncers in a night club in Minneapolis and Chauvin might have had some kind of beef with Floyd and that is why he had killed him. However, we don’t know if there is any truth to it. This killing has angered people all over the country. There has been a petition circulating around in change.org to charge all the four police officers.
Actions Of The Angry Americans:
From Wednesday, people are protesting out in the streets all over America with the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter’. The phrase is trending worldwide in Twitter and many celebrities have come forward to support the protest by posting about it on social media. Billie Eilish, Dwayne Johnson, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ellen DeGeneres and many more. Beyoncé has posted a video on Instagram on Friday stating her opinion on the issue and urging the people to sign the petition.
Here is the post of Beyoncé where she shares a heartfelt message,
“We need justice for George Floyd. We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We’re broken and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain. I’m sure you feel hopeless by the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killings of human beings. No more seeing people of color as less than human. We can no longer look away. George is all of our family in humanity. He’s our family because he’s a fellow American” said Beyoncé.
American people are disgusted over these issues which keeps on repeating time and time again. A common question among Americans now is that, ‘If police have started killing, who should I complain to?’. I feel that these kind of issues will fade only if the thought process of people change. Let’s just hope that George Floyd will rest in peace and his fight will be fought over by his fellow Americans.
