Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 film written by Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry,
this Sci-fi romantic drama leaves an everlasting impact on it’s viewers because of the outstanding imagination and
emotional content of the movie.This classic outshines in every aspect.
You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The film shows how humans themselves are responsible for ruining something that is written for them so beautifully.
The movie revolves around the couple who are so much in love but they try to part their ways due to some stupid reasons.
Clementine Kruczynski and Joel Barish are completely opposite characters and they say opposites attract though this might or might not be the reason for them to fall in love,
Clementine is a spontaneous and impulsive type of girl whereas Joel is a thinker and a soft spoken person. They both meet in a party. After dating for sometime, Clementine breaks up because they both have a fight over Clementine being too rash,
Out of depression from the break up Clementine hires a mysterious firm Lacuna and undergoes a medical procedure to erase all of her memory of Joel.
Joel is shattered after he finds out about this and since he is unable to live without Clementine , he also undergoes the same procedure.
Things don’t go as planned and what happens next is where the movie begins,
The revival of the Love
Both travel to Montauk that day, and they almost immediately connect when they run across each other a couple of times on the way,feeling drawn to each other despite their contrasting personalities.
Although Joel and Clementine do not realize it, they were once in a relationship, having separated after dating for two years.
They connect instantly and spend time with each other and they start to fall in love all over again;
Mary(Kirsten Dunst) happens to discover that she was also underwent the procedure because she was in love
with Dr Howard(the head doctor who erased the memories) and this is the reason why she happened to work their and was infatuated towards Howard.
Mary finds out about this on the day when Joel erases his memories;
After sometime when Clementine and Joel are together but unknown of their past , they receive letters from Mary like every other patient who underwent the procedure because Mary had realized that erasing the memories does not help the person and eventually he or she has to face what is gone;
When they both get to know their past , they get completely speechless but in the end they finally realize they were meant to be together and reunite.
The run inside the Mind
One of the most heartbreaking scene is when Joel and Clementine finally bid farewell inside his head, when Joel tries every possible way to escape from erasing her memories but fails to do so because it’s a trap in the mind map;
She leans in and whispers, “Meet me in Montauk” and they bid farewell inside Joel’s mind.
Clementine guiding his escape is merely a projection in Joel’s mind. She represents his will to hold on and he
does so through what he knows of her spontaneous personality.
When they challenge the erasing process by hiding in childhood remembrances and other “off the map” memories,
the escape route is always suggested by Clementine which is generally Joel asking to himself subconsciously that
what would Clementine do in this situation,
So when she whispers that final line inside his head, what he’s really doing is implanting an impulse; something
Lacuna can’t touch and that is the main reason why after the procedure Joel finds an urge to be Montauk.
The fantasies of this movie are more real than anything I have ever saw, through the memory erasing fiction
Kaufman has told us that what we give up so easily in some point of our lives is something that we could be following inside our minds.
Filming & Cinematography
In American Cinematography director of photography Ellen Kuras describes how they went “back to early
cinema, where magicians were using live-action practical effects in order to change time and space”,
This is the main reason why almost everything in this movie feels so real and the events that occur inside Joel’s
mind where he escapes from the map to hide in the small remembrances of his childhood is a complete
outstanding description of creativity and imagination.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has the most amazing cast and personally speaking I absolutely adore them.
Jim Carrey ,Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo , they are practically best in what they do
and this is another reason for this movie to be this perfect, the marvelous performances by the actors makes it a complete masterpiece.
- Jim Carrey – Joel
- Kate Winslet – Clementine
- Kirsten Dunst – Mary
- Elijah Wood Patrick
- Tom Wilkinson– Howard
- Mark Ruffalo – Stan
Overview and My thoughts
The movie revolves around the famous saying that what’s meant to happen will always find a way and thus no
matter how hard the humans try to run away form it they will find each other again somewhere.
Joel running in his mind from the map shows the power of true love and how he imagines Clementine to be his
strength in his subconscious and that without her he would be in a puzzle;
Similarly how even after erasing Joel, Clementine finds herself drawn towards him and reminiscing the old
moments which were lost.
Some of the sayings of this movie have deeply moved me , they are so very realistic and pragmatic that they are really hard to ignore.
The title of the film is a quotation from the 1717 poem Eloisa to Abelard by Alexander Pope.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a complete masterpiece and is the total mind bending and
heartbreaking film, everyone in the movie has out done themselves and it outshines completely.
