Hello everyone!!!.
Today I’ll be writing about something I really love.
Some of you probably already know this movie or the trilogy of books.
I still thank the Universe that my bae suggested it to me (…. before you make assumptions; no, I’m single…but this is my bae for life….).
It’s Me Before You.
Yes, the absolutely heart-warming triology by Jojo Moyes.
So today I’ll give you Me Before You; 7 best moments to cherish…. (…these are based on my own opinion and no one is bound to feel the same….).
Released on 23rd May 2016 in New York. 3rd June 2016 in the United States and United Kingdom. The movie garnered mixed reviews but grossed $208 millions. Let me list the seven moments from this work of wonder that I can still remember as if I just watched it. Here we go:
1.Introduction of Louisa Clarke in Me Before You:
We are introduced first to Will Traynor and Louisa’s (…or Lou’s…) introduced two years after that. We see her working at a café and being sweet to people. My favourite moment is when two older women ask her the number of calories in the cupcakes. She replies with a number but adds : “…. But you eat less if you eat them standing…”. That immediately reflects her sociable, bubbly and bright personality. It’s definitely the first of the 7 best moments to cherish.
2. Conversation in the garden:
Lou is asked by Mrs.Traynor to take Will out to the garden due to ongoing spring cleaning. In the garden they have a really beautiful conversation and Will questions her about her “exotic” fashion choices. She reveals she wanted to be a fashion designer (… Yay!!!…) but ended up working at the café. She did that to win a bet against her sister who said she couldn’t but stayed three years. This moment right here in the movie symbolises the first time Lou really opened up to Will. She is encouraged by him to expand her horizons and experience things. He says he sees potential in her.
3. Will and Lou at the end of the Mozart concert:
After their disastrous but hilarious date at the horseracing course, Will and Lou head out to a Mozart concert. Lou looks mesmerising and classic in her popular red dress. The concert moves both of them, probably impacts Lou more than Will. However, the actual moment here is when at the end when they reach the Traynor mansion or castle. Will refuses to let Lou take him back just yet. The both of them stay in the car in silence. Will says;
I just want to be a man who’s been to a concert with a girl in a red dress a few minutes more…
I feel that it truly reflects how helpless he feels due to his quadriplegia. How desperate he might feel at times and how much he misses being active.
4. Lou’s birthday dinner in Me Before You:
Lou didn’t expect him to, but Will did attend her 27th birthday celebration dinner. Now, this was a true dramatic few moments. Patrick (…running man or Lou’s athletic but quite self-centred boyfriend of 7 years.…) was almost turning green. He even threw a snide teasing remark at Will and his disability. But the most beautiful moment is when we realise as does Lou subconsciously who the more deserving man is. Patrick presents Lou with a necklace that says “Patrick” on it and kisses her possessively. (….For heaven’s sake!!! Is she your pet??? She’s your girlfriend!!!!!….).
Will acts more thoughtful and presents her with two pairs of Bumblebee tights (.…Awwwww…my heart didn’t just UwU, it melted…).
Yes, the same bumblebee tights that Lou once told him were her most loved possession in the world.
She couldn’t find them anywhere anymore.
Will had them especially made for her.
Now that is how you win a heart; you remember the important little things that make people smile.
It is obvious that this is one of the 7 best moments to cherish. This was one joyous scene and my heart definitely lit up as did Lou’s.
5. Alicia’s Wedding:
Alicia Dewar as you probably know or don’t know, is Will’s ex-girlfriend who left him after the accident.
She is actually marrying one of Will’s closest friends, Rupert and invited him to the wedding. He does go, with Lou as his date.
I’m pretty sure he is dying inside but it was probably a way for Will to let go of her.
His bond with Lou strengthens here.
The couple even lie to Alicia about presenting her with a mirror. (….I find this hilarious, it’s like Will teased her by saying he got them a mirror of all things….like he’s telling her to reflect upon her life maybe….or I’m just reading too much into it….still hilarious….).
Everyone seems to be feeling rather shocked by his presence at the wedding but Lou loosens up the atmosphere for him.
She’s a little tipsy, unknowingly so but she asks him to a dance.
She sits on his lap and dance they do. Right at this moment he tells her ;
You are pretty much the only thing that makes me want to get up in the morning…
Now we know how he feels. It’s not directly spoken but yes, we know he loves her.
From being an arrogant and cold ‘arse’ (…in his own words…) to confessing this to her.
They have loads more fun and he finally agreed to fly to Mauritius with Lou. (…you know, Lou’s plan to save him from committing assisted suicide by showing him life could be beautiful even with his disability???…No?…).
6. Goodbye…:
She couldn’t change his mind. Lou was completely heartbroken over Will still choosing to go through with his plan in Switzerland.
She didn’t want to support him dying but after an eye-opening conversation with her father she follows after him. In this moment she finally chose to stand beside him on a choice he made for himself. (…he deserves that much, I do not support euthanasia but he is a consulting adult who has tried every possible way to love life again.…).
They don’t say it but it is evident on their faces; their hearts are beating as one. Lou and Will say their final good-byes with Lou singing to him the “Molohonky song”. If aren’t wailing by this point in the movie, just don’t even.
7. Paris…. in Bumblebee tights:
This moment is at the very end of Me Before You, we see Lou in Paris. Remember how Will said there’s a place better than his favourite spot at the castle?,
Paris it is. He wrote her a letter.
In the letter he describes where he expects her to be reading it.
Lou was sitting on a chair in one of the beautiful sidewalk cafés of Paris with outdoor seating. The letter went;
Clark. A few weeks should have passed by the time you read this. If you follow the instructions, you’ll be in Paris on one of those chairs that never sit quite level on a pavement. I hope it’s still sunny. Across the bridge to your right, you’ll see L’artisan Parfumeur. You should try the scent called Papiomextrem. I always did think it would smell great on you.
He explains how the inheritance he left her would be just enough to turn over a new page in her life.
He wants her to reach for her dreams, to get out into the world and to actually live.
She does visit the perfume store and buys Papiomextrem. Lou walks by confidently in her bumblebee tights with her emotions all over her serene face. As she stares out to the bridge and the sky, the movie ends with Will’s last words to her;
You are scored on my heart, Clark. You have been the first day you walked in with your sweet smile and your ridiculous clothes and your bad jokes and your complete inability to ever hide a single thing you felt. Don’t think of me too often. I don’t want you getting sad. Just live well. Just live. I’ll be walking beside you every step of the way.
Love,
Will.
My own rant about Me Before You and the 7 best moments to cherish:
Thank you so freaking much to my Bae for making me watch this beauty almost three years back.
It moved me then and it still does.
Lou gave Will some of the most special moments of his life just before his death.
His dying wish freed her from not only her insecurities and inhibitions but also from her obligations to supporting her family.
He gave her a new life.
One full of possibilities and painted with her dreams. True embodiment of Bittersweet right here. It will forever be one of the best stories I have experienced.
I also love how the story portrays free will and acceptance.
I still do not support assisted suicide for the disabled but in a case the like of Will’s where no recovery is possible, it is better to let them go if they choose so.
If you haven’t read the Trilogy or watched the movie then; man, you have no idea what you’re missing out.
I gave you 7 best moments to cherish. Go get yourself some true bittersweet love and don’t forget the tissues.
Thank you.
