Hello everyone!. It’s me again, your hopefully remarkable if not favourite writer.
Summer is here. It started on 21st June for the northern hemisphere of the earth, the day a lot of people speculated to be the end of the world. (…like the movie 2012 which said 2012 is Noah’s Ark 2.0 ….).
This summer, we want to give our cyberpunk, technological and dystopian lovers something to look forward to. You obviously can watch them too, it’s a free world.
So I give you: Best Cyberpunk movies for summer 2020…
1. Blade Runner (1982)
One of the most well-known cyberpunk movie of all times. This classic had to be here didn’t it?. Released in 1982 and having a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Blade Runner is a beauty. (…you can have your own opinions on it of course...).
The plot takes us to 2019 which we know is a year past but understand that the movie was released in the 80’s. In the future era, a human named Deckard is sent out on a mission to retire (…to kill…) genetically engineered humanoids called replicants. His job is that of a Blade Runner. He has four such humanoids to kill who have illegally infiltrated Earth and can be lethal in a combat. The movie was heavily criticised before gathering a cult fan base. I have a feeling it will invoke your respect since making a sci-fi movie like this in that era was no easy feat. See if you can escape it’s charms.
2. The Terminator
How can we not have The Terminator here in our list for the best Cyberpunk movies for summer 2020. It is Cyberpunk OG. Seriously, Arnold Schwarzenegger, all those high-tech action sequences and that metal exoskeleton???. Bam! Cyberpunk jackpot. Released in 1984, The Terminator remains at the top of futuristic technological movies with a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story takes us through a dystopian future bubbling with war between two entities: Humans and AI. Yes, the technology made by humans comes to bite us on our behinds as depicted by The Terminator.
The Human resistance fighting against them is about to win but the AI soldiers sends The Terminator who is a relentless killing machine back to the past.
To kill the mother of the leader of the resistance so he’s never born. Pretty snazzy idea except the human resistance also sends one of theirs to protect her. Thus, begins the chase known as the terminator series. Don’t forget to watch it.
3. The Matrix
Yes!. I did the most predictable thing by including The Matrix in the list of Cyberpunk movies for this summer but honestly, weren’t you just waiting for it?. Released in 1999 and with a rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, Matrix will remain a cult favourite forever.
If you don’t already know it and even if you do, I’ll take you a very short trip through the story.
A computer technician is abruptly woken up and forced to face the reality of the lie he had been living his whole life. Confusing?.
Well, our protagonist wakes up to the real reality to find out that robots have taken over the world and what everyone is living is nothing more than a fantastical dream humanity is trapped in. (….Scary when you think about it right???….).
Then, he joins a group of woke humans and together they fight against the technology that is keeping humanity trapped. It has sequels and one is scheduled to be released in 2022 but people often criticise them a lot.
I love the original matrix but I don’t have a problem with the other two. Have you watched it already?.
4. Minority Report
Released in 2002 and with a rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, Minority Report just had be on our Cyberpunk summer list. It has Tom Cruise people!!!. Did you really never watch it? Even by mistake or while surfing through channels? It is pretty popular. It deserves a place in our list for best Cyberpunk movies for summer 2020.
The plot takes us to 2054 where a crime prevention unit known as PreCrime has reduced the murder rates of Washington DC to zero by using genetically mutated humans.
These humans have the gift of precognition or visions of the future where they receive information about murders that are about to take place. But then one of them sees our protagonist, a PreCrime officer murdering someone and knowing this, he flees.
He then kidnaps, fights and unveils conspiracies to obtain a minority report of his future aka an alternate future to what was seen. Watch it to know more.
I promise it is very interesting.
Okay. This is one futuristic movie that seemed more realistic to me than some of the others I have seen. (…Not underestimating technology or anything…). It could happen. Elysium was released in 2013 and has a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a cool cyberpunk story. Like I said, it could happen.
The movie takes us to a future where humans have managed to divide themselves (…hahaha, of course...) into two different groups: the Elites and the poor. But this shows a whole different level of economic discrimination; the rich live on a space station orbiting the Earth known as Elysium containing all things good and the latest technology. The poor are left on a scorched Earth, suffering.
Enters our protagonist who has five days to live before dying of radioactive poisoning and wants to get into Elysium for the cure. (…seems like they found the cure to cancer in Elysium….). Thus, he agrees to join a heist with some of his acquaintances which involves stealing expensive data from an Elysian official and our the protagonist needing an exoskeleton implanted over him. Interesting. Honestly, it’s good, like seriously good and if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably love the ending. Not fan of the violence but you have to watch till the end.
6. Blade Runner 2049
This is of course, the sequel to the original Blade Runner which is also mentioned at the beginning of this list. This had to be here for obvious reasons. It took 30 years to make this sequel to the sci-fi and Cyberpunk A-lister!!!!. It was released in 2017 and rates at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. You have to add this to your binge list of best Cyberpunk movies for summer 2020.
The story takes us with protagonist agent K the blade runner to 2049. He is a replicant himself, terminating rogue replicants. He finds the remains of replicant Rachael who had delivered a baby which was considered impossible before. K informs his superior of his findings but is commanded to terminate the child so as to keep it all a secret and prevent a war. But his findings while searching for the child resonate with his own memories. He is led to believe that he might be Rachael’s child but, is he?. What’s more? The child’s father is none other the OG blade runner Rick Deckard himself. You would know all about how it goes when you watch it of course. It is once again, a very good story. I hope you love it.
7. Ready Player One
Did you watch it?. I’m guessing probably not. (…did you?…you didn’t?…what sort of a gamer are you if you didn’t???…). Released in March 2018, Ready Player One has a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ready Player One has a plot that reminded me of Willy Wonks minus the weirdness, sugar high and oompah-loompahs. (… I liked the artistic, all-knowing and chocolate crazy oompah-loompahs… Can relate to them in certain ways….can you?…). I guess it is the Charlie and the Chocolate factory of the Cyberpunk genre. The setting is in the year 2045 where the poor live in slums called stacks. The owner of the biggest company that uses VR and takes people into a replica of the real world for entertainment, dies. He leaves behind a quest the reward of which would be the ownership of the company.
Our protagonist is one of the players and we witness as he gathers friends and dives into this adventure which has very real consequences. His competitors even bomb his whole stack to kill him after he discovers a way to get through the game. But of course the movie has to go on and he escapes. Like I said, Charlie and the chocolate factory of Cyberpunk. Watch to know the rest. It is good overall and I think it deserves more ratings.
This movie was cool. Seriously cool. Have you watched the Cyberpunk Upgrade?. Released in 2018, it has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
We are led into the life of our protagonist Grey and his wife Asha. They are doing fine in life until their AI controlled car malfunctions while they’re traveling and they are ambushed by assassins who murder his wife. Grey is shot in the neck and turns into a quadriplegic. He is then given a surgery by his wife’s boss. It includes planting a chip in his brain to control his body and being able to walk again. He discovers that the chip or AI in his head talks to him. It leads him to his wife’s killers and helps him get revenge. But, at what cost is this AI doing all this for him?. We see sinister and cold plots. Watch to really know more. I am not kidding when I say that it’ll have you think.
Hey. Did you like the list of best Cyberpunk movies for summer 2020?. You might feel like I left out your favourites but don’t worry. Feel free to mention them in the comments. I do know a lot more than these but come on, these have the best ratings from viewers. So, if you are new to the genre I hope you are fascinated by one of these. Summer is here and it is time for not only hard work but also some fun and movie binging. Go ahead, stream these jewels from the Cyberpunk genre or watch them again if you already have because well, why not?.
These movies are the most popular ones but even then a lot of the population does not know of their existence. I like their stories but some of them seem to be straight out of a nightmare, no offence. A majority of them seems to be from Steven Spielberg too.
It is summer which means it is time to explore and much more. But I do understand that the summer of 2020 wouldn’t be the best one for most. I hope you are safe and manage to have a decent summer with these movies if you’re stuck at home 24/7 like I am. They are available on streaming platforms and on YouTube if you don’t use a streaming service.
Thank you very much.
