Natalie Wood : Larger Than Life
Natalie Wood started acting in the age of 4 and have starred in many classic movies. Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause, West Side Story, Splendour in the Grass are some of many. She was nominated for 3 Oscars before the age of 25 and that made her a superstar and an inspiration among her fellow actors. She appeared in 5 dozen films and television shows and was considered as a Hollywood beauty. She married Robert Wagner in 1972 and had her daughter Natasha and later re-married Richard Gregson and had her second daughter Courtney.
Her unfortunate death was a shock to all and remained as a mystery as well. She drowned off the coast of Santa Cantalina Island in California in 1981 at the age of 43. She was in a yacht with few people including her husband, Richard Gregson and actor, Christopher Walken. When Natalie Wood died, Natasha was only 11 years old while her sister was just 7 years old. Speculations arose after her death that the drowning may not have been an accident but a murder by her husband, Richard Gregson. Though Wood’s autopsy report revealed that she died of drowning and hypothermia, the rumours didn’t fade away. Nobody from the family addressed the speculations as well.
“In 2012, I became a mom, so it started to become very important to me that I take a little bit of a hold of the narrative and diffuse some of the noise and shine a light on all of the amazing qualities about my mom that not everybody knows,”Natasha Gregson Wagner in Sundance Film Festival
Natasha Gregson Wagner says that she never planned to address these rumours but after her mother’s death case was reopened by the LAPD in 2018, her stepfather Richard Gregson has been named as a person of interest so through this documentary she hopes that people could understand her life and how her stepfather, Richard Gregson was a kind man and how she never hurt her. In the documentary, Natasha asks Mr. Gregson about what happened in the yacht and how she drowned. He says that on the night of 28th November, 1981 he and the actor Christopher Walken were drinking and fighting over how much Natalie should work. Natalie left the place and after resolving the conflict, Richard went to find Natalie but she was nowhere to be found. Nobody heard anything and later the authorities found her body in the water. Mr. Gregson while fighting back tears says that “ That night has gone through my mind so many times”. Natasha also adds that Richard loved her mom very much and that he would have given his life if he had known she was in distress.
“I feel that the night my mom died was an accident. And so I hope that that kind of media speculation ends with this documentary,”Natasha Gregson Wagner told The Oprah Magazine
