The Dark Knight Series is a set of three Christopher Nolan Batman movies. It includes Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Actors including Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Cillian Murphy who appeared in all three movies. The Trilogy is considered by many to be one of the best of all times. Batman’s grounded portrayal was universally acclaimed by people of all ages, making a diverse demographic audience. If you have not seen the trilogy, there is a lot you are missing out on. It is action-packed and entertaining. A story based on fear and guilt, our characters are driven by strong impulses. Here is all you need to know about the Batman trilogy that we all marvel.
What Do We Know?
It has almost been an entire decade since we were given the Batman Trilogy, and the final one being The Dark Knight Rises, that aired in 2012. Over $2 billion was achieved by the makers of the movie. They changed the perception of a superhero for many, constructed a whole new audience and fanbase while breaking the stereotypes and mainstream cliches. DC made batman in comic books but the first live-action movie was a massive hit only because of Christopher Nolan’s vision.
Instead of colorful costumes and optimistic storylines, the batman movies consist of a grim world, full of maniacs and terror rising, real-world fears and desperation to be in a better reality. Batman himself became a force to reckon with. A rigid vigilante who was an anger-driven fictional hero dressed as an animal. The trilogy covers it all from the beginning, the origins of batman to the unyielding and gloomy world of Gotham. To the villains who help define the movie and plot. To the charismatic Catwoman who defies the rules of being a so-called good girl. The terror of Ra’s-al-Ghul and the truth about his offspring.
Let us unravel the characters, plots, reviews of the three parts –
The Characters –
- Robin or Officer Blake
- James Gordon
- And many more.
To understand the trilogy better some characters of extreme importance are explained below-
Thomas, apart from being a good man and a father, is also a celebrated surgeon, and the chairman of Wayne Enterprises, a technology, and real estate development company, as well as the head of the charitable Wayne Foundation. Thomas and Martha, his wife invest heavily in improving Gotham. Funding the construction of an elevated train system. They also have a son, Bruce, whose childhood winds up punctuated by a series of traumas and PTSD. Including falling down a well while playing with his childhood friend Rachel and being swarmed by bats. That part’s important, by the way. It comes up later in the movie.
Ironically, Thomas and Martha succeed in pulling Gotham out of its depression, but only in their deaths. The two are shot and killed in a mugging by a low-level criminal, Joe Chill. Bruce witnessed his parent’s deaths from his own eyes. After which he is distraught and blames himself. The city’s elite are inspired into action, helping to clean up Gotham and create a better home. Little do they know, that this will inspire further, more deceptive actions by the League. The league of shadows is plotting a new form of attack, with intensions to cause an economic collapse in the despondent city of Gotham. The league wants to restore balance by destruction, thinking that what they are doing is right to help restore humanity in Gotham.
Bruce Wane, our protagonist who is perpetually angry with a vengeance on his mind. This headstrong character that grows with time shows you that change is the only constant. Apart from being a super genius and rich man, he is also very strong and determined. The reason why he does what he does is often to hazy to be determined. But he learns from his mistakes and defends Gotham till the very end. The good looking Christian Bane, who puts so many emotions and skill in his work makes you feel that Batman is real and not a fictional character. Also, have you seen his bat-suit isn’t it something every fan wants in their closet?
Described by DC as, the most iconic fictional character in the world, Batman has dedicated his life to an endless crusade, a war on all criminals in the name of his murdered parents, who were killed in front of him when he was just a child. Another important character is the one of Rachel, she is the only emotional connection Bruce Wayne, has remaining and when she is gone we see him spiraling. Till he realizes that he has more to do and save.
Joker, the role that was universally acknowledged and admired by several cinephiles. The role played by Heath Ledger, of a psychotic anarchist and a man who does not have any remorse. He single-handedly wanted to destroy Gotham. This character was a mass-murdering schizophrenic who makes you hate him. According to me, this was one of the best antagonists in the trilogy.
The character Bane played by none other than Tom Hardy was the antagonist in the last movie of the trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Bane was the friend and protector of Talia al Ghul and the commander of the League of Shadows. He was formidable in both strategy, order, and physical combat. Only one capable of fighting batman.
Batman Begins – Plot & Review –
A young Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels to the Far East, where he’s trained in the martial arts by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), a member of the mysterious League of Shadows. Ducard reveals the League’s true purpose – the ultimate destruction of Gotham City. Wayne returns to Gotham with the intent on cleaning up the city and making it a better place, without resorting to murder. With the help of Alfred (Michael Caine), his loyal butler, and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), a tech expert at Wayne Enterprises, Batman is born. This part is my personal favorite, where we see Bruce Wane becoming Batman gradually.
Step by step he learns to become this fierce creature, not considering himself a hero but a man with vision and guts who fights evil sometimes. With the story moving at a favorable pace along with such talented and skilled performers who depict their roles with ease and make you believe in this harsh reality of Gotham. The audience resonates with Batman, being a fighter and a silent savior who is only human at the end of the day.
The iconic scene, where Bruce Wayne encounters with the bats for the first time in the cave gives everyone chills [the famous bat cave]. Dr.Jonathan Crane has fully adopted his Scarecrow persona and is somehow making a living selling recreational fear gas. A few critical aspects of the movie including the dark themed color palette. Where almost every scene has elements of black or grey circling back to the batman’s attire, depicting his thoughts and actions which are seldom dark as well. The lighting used including shadows and orange-yellow lighting, etc add to a ton of depth especially in the cave scenes and encounters. Helping us understand the dominance and the demeanor of Bruce Wayne’s character. The first time he says, ‘I am Batman’, is surely a scene you will not forget. Hence, this movie in particular out of the trilogy speaks to me.
The Dark Knight –
The Dark Knight, directed, co-produced, and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the second installment of Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale. And is considered one of the best films of its decade and one of the best superhero films ever made.
The movie begins with a gripping bank robbery scene and moving ahead we see a fighting scene between the bad men and batman. And oh let us not forget the appearance of so many batmans together. Of to a great start, we see the recurring cast and some new characters back in the game. With new twists, a new storyline, a new bad guy, and new circumstances. It makes the whole story more engaging than before. Batman, along with Harvey Dent and James Gordon forms an alliance to get rid of organized crime and the joker from Gotham City. We also see Bruce Wane’s personal agenda of stepping down as Batman and the protector of Gotham. Passing it down to Harvey, so he can be with Rachel, his childhood love.
The character of the joker is more of psychological anarchy against any morals. The agent of chaos and destruction was played by Heath Ledger. The joker’s character is portrayed so well that you will surely hate his guts and demeanor. The way his crazy mind works and almost succeeds in destroying the whole of Gotham and its people will leave you at the edge of your seat.
The Dark Knight earned $534.9 million in North America and $469.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $1 billion. Worldwide, it is the 46th highest-grossing film, the highest-grossing film of 2008. A recreation of bat-cycle we see bat pod in this movie, apart from the costumes the sophisticated technology and vehicles left fans so intrigued. I believe this movie made the trilogy more engaging and left fans wanting more. The plot twists and cinematic challenges, effects, etc this movie faced made the audience enjoy it throughout. The movie towards the end will leave you perplexed but in a good way.
A scene that will leave you with a sense of hope is when we hear Gordon telling his son, he [batman] is the hero Gotham deserves but not the one it needs right now…, he is a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a dark knight.
The Dark Knight Rises –
The Dark Knight Rises was also directed by Christopher Nolan. An interesting fact that many people do not know is that he wrote the screenplay along with his brother Jonathan Nolan. This movie has a new bad guy and he is known as Bane. Bane who is played by Tom Hardy, is a mysterious terrorist and former member of the League of Shadows. He abducts nuclear physicist, Dr. Leonid Pavel, from a CIA aircraft. We see the infamous Catwoman, also known as Selina Kyle. She is a burglar and grifter. Played by the beautiful Anne Hathaway, who has a unique relationship with batman in the movie.
Let’s focus on Bane. He says that a citizen is going to nuke the entire city. He is desperate to continue Ra’s al Ghul’s legacy by destroying Gotham. Bane uses the chaos to impose martial law, releasing the criminals in Blackgate Prison, employing Batman’s stolen armory of vehicles, and encouraging the most violent possible conclusion. The story progresses and new truths unfold. At the end of the movie, we see a romantic revelation of Catwoman’s feelings and the ultimate truth of his identity coming to light in front of Gordon.
We see officer Blake or Robin, standing as a pillar of idealism. Blake feels like he has a connection with Wayne, looking up to him as a hero figure. He assumes that Wayne is probably Batman. One scene that gets me scared every time is when Selina/ Catwoman tricks Batman into being captured by Bane. We see Bruce completely bankrupt, he trusts Miranda with his company who later turns out to be a foe. This is the first time we see Batman being beaten down miserably, his injury taking the best of him, but still, he rises.
This movie manages to keep you on the edge. The story has this compelling power, it gets better with each passing scene. The Dark Knight Rises is a marvelous conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy. The movie comes with unlimited action, mesmerizing special effects.
If you have not seen it yet, you are missing a whole world of entertainment and a gripping story. A hero, a Batman you will admire, his determination and growth as a character. He is a source of righteousness who you will empathize with. The end of the movie leaves you with questions, loads of hope, and a sense of pride. And the story really comes in a full circle. The trilogy will surely compel you, whilst making you a fan, leaving you wanting more. Definitely worth watching.
