Hello people! So, how many of you love the Lego Universe???
How many of you just really loved Lego blocks ( original or not) as kids?.
If you were anything like me (i.e absolutely obsessively perfectionist with whatever I made with Lego building blocks no matter if it was realistic or not, for some reason and extremely sentimental about them too…) , there’s a high chance you already have watched all of the major Lego movies. Here’s my take on the Lego movie franchise.
The Lego movie: ( February 2014)
If you haven’t seen it, Spoilers alert!!!!. Released on 7th February 2014, The first installment in the Lego Universe was The Lego Movie. With a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was a huge success grossing around $468.1 million with a budget of $60 – $65 (…cool huh??…).
The plotline opens with our prime antagonist, Lord Business stealing the “kragle” ( it’s just Krazy Glue….) , a weapon that he plans to use to takeover the Lego realms and blinding the wizard Vitruvius who tried to stop him. Vitruvius then makes up a prophecy ( “because it rhymes….”) of a special masterbuilder ( aka a very creative person/ Lego person who is able to build things sooner than you can say “Lego”….) restoring the “piece of resistance” to the “kragle” and ending Business’s rampage. Years go by and we are introduced to our protagonist Emmet, a construction worker who follows instructions perfectly ( something masterbuilders don’t do. They think outside the box…) as set by now President Business for the whole city of Bricksburg. He unintentionally finds the piece of resistance resulting in him being hunted by Business’s men and is saved by Wyldstyle ( yes… Wyldstyle….love her hair!!!). They then take off to Vitruvius and travel through the realms to a gathering of all masterbuilders to discuss a plan meant for saving the universe (Also: Wyldstyle’s boyfriend is Batman….) .
The whole realm is attacked by Business’s men ( I felt really bad for the cop guy….) as Emmet fails to convince the council of his ( still untapped) potential and only Emmet, Wyldstyle, Batman, Unikitty ( Yes!!! A Unicorn kitten….), Astronaut dude and Vetruvius escape.
They then make up a plan which almost succeeds except Emmet is thrown out of the Lego universe and into ours while trying to save all the other masterbuilders imprisoned by Business. Just before that he is told by Vitruvius that he had made up that prophecy to show him ( or anyone else…) how much he can achieve if only he’d believe in himself and his abilities.
Here we discover the boy Finn who is actually creating and staging everything in his father’s Lego set. His father scolds him for messing with his things but he distracts him and puts Emmet back into the Lego universe to complete the quest.
His father later confronts him and after seeing that President Business is based on his crazy need for structure and perfection, realises his flaw of banning his children from playing with Lego bricks and keeping it all to himself. Then while they reconcile, we see Emmet enlighten President Business ( ” You dont have to the bad guy”….) stop the “Kragle” and release everyone frozen because of it by spraying spirits. The movie ends with Emmet and Wyldstyle ( Now, Lucy…finally holding hands!!!!!!!!!…they always got interrupted….) starting to date and the city being invaded by aliens from planet Duplon as a result of Finn’s father allowing his small sister to play with the bricks as well.
In my view, this was one of the most heartwarming movies I had ever watched.
Loved their concept of creativity existing as a latent energy we can access to only by believing in ourselves.
We often lose our childlike wonder and imagination as we grow, this movie is embracing it and encouraging it. The movie is really colourful as one would expect a children’s film to be but also comedic and very detailed.
The Lego Batman Movie: February 2017
The Lego Batman Movie is the second installment in the Lego Universe and a spin-off of the first Lego movie. It has got 89% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and was once again a commercial hit. It was released on February 10th 2017 in the United States.
Spoilers!!!! The movie takes the viewers through the realm of Lego Gotham City from the DC universe and opens with of course, the Joker and Batman fighting.
However, this time Batman hurts Jokers feelings by saying that he does not play an important part in Batman’s life which is not true, everyone agrees right? No Joker= No Batman.
He is Batman’s greatest Nemesis!!!. Hence, Joker is out again on a mission to prove just how important a part he plays in Batman’s life by….guess what??? causing more trouble obviously. ( Come on Batty!!! Watch it… Joker has always been kind of sentimental….psychotic but sentimental….).
The same day Bruce Wayne i.e Batman’s normal self, attends a gala where he meets Barbara, the new police commissioner who plans to protect Gotham without the help of Batman and Dick ( Grayson was it?…) an orphan who gets Batman to adopt him by hitting right on the ” growing up without parents” chord. The Joker crashes the party with plans of revenge and gets sent to the Arkham Asylum with Harley Quinn escaping.
Feeling anxious about Joker conspiring against him he decides to steal Superman’s Phantom Zone Projector that he’d use against Joker. Albert, his butler and caretaker reminds him of Dick whom Batman then reluctantly accepts and disguises as Robin.
As they are about to send Joker to the phantom realm, Batman and Robin are caught by Barbara who misunderstands the situation and locks them up. Harley Quinn gets the Projector and unleash chaos upon Gotham after freeing all villains ( yep!!! Voldy is back as is Sauron, dinosaurs and much more….) Batman while trying to fight him alone in fears of losing Dick and Barbara who he’s growing accustomed to, ends up in the Phantom realm.
Realising his fault, he makes a deal with the gatekeeper and gets back to Gotham but this time let’s Robin and Barbara transformed into Batgirl accompany him.
Together they fight Joker and the other villains but then, Batman finally acknowledges Joker’s importance in his life. The villains neglected by Joker, the citizens, the allies and our trio save Gotham city from exploding ( with bombs Joker stole from the Batcave…) by creating a chain link around the plates of Gotham city. Batman later let’s Joker escape with his gang having confidence in his own little group.
It’s Batman and Joker people!!!!. I loved it. I liked how they portrayed Batman’s unacknowledged feelings of loss, loneliness and his fear of having a family again ( as stated by Albert…). His character really grows by the end of the movie and that is a lesson we’d all want in our kids right? growing by facing and acknowledging our fears???.
The humour was obviously another well-known trait of Lego movies as seen in the first one.
The Lego Ninjago Movie: September 2017
So…tell me, do you like Ninjas??? Because I hella love them!!!. You have to have watched or heard something about Ninjas. I’d give up my entire lifestyle to train and become a Ninja. The Lego Ninjago Movie is the third installment in the Lego Universe.
Though grossing more than its budget worldwide, the movie got 55% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. It is based on the Lego animated series Ninjago: Masters of Shinjitsu. Let’s get into it.
Uh-oh Spoiler alert!!!! The movie opens with a young boy visiting an ancient relic store and being told of the story of Ninjago by its owner Mr. Liu.
He begins with the realm of Ninjago and the city of the same name in the Lego universe. It is attacked everyday by our antagonist, Lord Garmadon but remains unconquered due to six secret Ninjas who fight him with mechanical equipments. Yes, you have guessed by now that our protagonist is a Ninja but he is also the son of Garmadon ( no kidding…kid is going through a tough time thanks to Garmadon….). Lloyd Garmadon, our protagonist; the whole city hates him because of his father. He leads a tough highschool life in the day and fights as a Ninja by night.
Their master, Master Wu returns and tells them that their Techs don’t make them Ninjas and encourages them to find their elements. They all find their elemental colours and associations but Lloyd’s element is green which seems incomprehensible to him. Garmadon strikes again and manages to defeat the Ninjas with new mechanical equipments but Lloyd uses the ultimate weapon ( which Master Wu had told them could defeat Garmadon but never to use….) which ends up bringing a cat….yes, an actual, living and breathing cat called Meowthra into Ninjago that keeps toppling things over ( what did you expect from a cat in the world of tiny Lego people???….). As Garmadon celebrates, Lloyd frustrated, confronts his father saying he wished he never was his father. ( Can you blame him?? He called Lloyd; Luh-loyd….).
Soon the Ninjas are seen discussing how to defeat Meowthra with the Ultimate, Ultimate weapon which Garmadon hears and then after a fight with Master Wu, ends up imprisoned.
But master Wu falls over a bridge ( ¯\_( -_- )_/¯ ), and tells the ninjas to find their inner peace (…piece….) leaving Garmadon to lead them. The Ninjas are then trained by Garmadon and go to the Temple of Fragile Foundations ( * cue Jackie Chan’s voice * this my friends is called ‘ Le art of foreshadowing‘…), Garmadon’s home where he confesses to Lloyd about wanting to stay with him and his mother but failing to give up his villainous ambitions. After discovering the weapon, the Ninjas are left imprisoned in the crumbling temple after Lloyd refused to join his father who still seeks to conquer Ninjago city. They escape with their elemental powers.
They are rescued by master Wu on his ship ” Destiny’s Bounty” from falling off of a cliff and set out to protect Ninjago. Meowthra has eaten up Garmadon who was charging at him with the Ultimate, Ultimate weapon while the Ninjas fight with his army. Lloyd now reveals to the whole city of his identity and realises that his power is the green force of Life. He ends up apologising to and forgiving his father while comforting Meowthra.
Garmadon now very emotionally overwhelmed cries tears of fire which makes Meowthra vomit him out. The movie ends with Meowthra befriending the Ninjas and Mr. Liu, the shopkeeper promising to train the boy he was narrating the story to.
It might not have all that glam or special attention from the world but you can’t deny that it does the best it could to deliver the signature message of Lego movies i.e to accept oneself. Loved that he made amends with his father and chose to see his unique value.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part ( February 2019)
The world didn’t seem ready for the second part now, did it??.
Did you never wonder what happened after the Duplon aliens invaded or tried to invade Bricksburg ???. You’ll find out in this sequel.
This is the fourth and latest installment in the Lego Universe and it’s major films. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part made more than it’s budget but was still deemed as underperforming. Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 85%.
Remember the invasion by the Duplo aliens? Well, our protagonist Emmet had welcomed them like the pacifist he is by creating a heart and offering it to them but they ate it.
Yes, they ate it and liked it so much that they kept asking for more which going forward five years, turned Bricksburg into Apocalypseburg, a realm rampant with people turning into much edgier versions of themselves and adapting to survive. Some of the master builders had gone into the space looking for Duplon in hopes of saving the realm but are yet to return.
The only exception to all of this is Emmet who continues to see everything through rose-coloured glasses. He meets Lucy to inform her of his ‘nightmare’ concerning an event called Armamageddon which Lucy suspects are visions and the colourful house he built for the two of them. Duplon attacks again compelling everyone to take refuge in the Batcave which too is invaded by the alien from the ship that was attacking them. She introduces herself as Captain Sweet Mayhem and invites them to a wedding ceremony. She picks five people she sees as suitable leaders and disappears into space while Emmet is left wondering how to get Lucy back. Thus, he constructs a spaceship to follow them but almost gets killed in the ride. However, someone named Rex Dangervest saves him and after being acquainted with Emmet, offers to help him while also telling him to ‘grow up’ and ‘toughen up’. Lucy and the others that were taken by Mayhem are seen travelling to the galaxy Systar with 11 brightly coloured and ‘girly’ planets. They are introduced to its ruler, Whatevera Wa’Nabi (….ummm…Whatever I wanna be???… Sure, go ahead who’s stopping you???….)who seems to be a shape-shifting creature and are told of her plans to marry Batman in order to set everything right. There is also a musical number here explaining how ‘Un-evil‘ she is (…This one’s got more songs than the first one peeps….).
Meanwhile, Emmet is being trained by Rex into becoming a stronger and tougher person as they head towards Systar galaxy. When they reach it, they see all the masterbuilders they had been waiting for living happy and peacefully even with their nemesis.
It is revealed that Lucy’s hair is actually alternate stripes of blue-pink all over and she had actually covered it all up with a black permanent marker in the past as she wanted to seem more tough (…still love her hair though…), when she and her friends are taken for grooming or therapy.
She resists all kinds of treatments from the aliens as she perceives them to be forms of manipulation and brain-washing. She gets out and meets Emmet with Rex and the three plan to stop the wedding.
On her way to do her part, Lucy gets into a conflict with Mayhem and defeats her but saves her from falling and she tells her that it was the people of Bricksburg that started everything. After seeing her true form, she realises that Whatevera Wa’Nabi is actually the heart constructed by Emmet that was offered to the Duplo aliens. It was Emmet’s friendship that formed the base of the Systar system. She goes on to stop Emmet from ruining the wedding but his mind is manipulated by Rex and he refuses to believe Lucy which results in the sabotage of the wedding. resulting in the sabotage of the wedding.
We are once again taken to the world of humans but this time with Lucy as she watches a teenage Finn smash his sister Bianca’s Duplo creations with Rex Dangervests spaceship in his hand, angry that she took some of his figures. Their mother fed up with them fighting, orders them to put everything in storage boxes and Lucy recognises this as ‘ Armamageddon’ ( i.e. Our mama gets in….) and the siblings slowly disassemble and put the pieces into boxes. Rex reveals to Emmet that he is actually a version of Emmet who after getting lost while trying to get to the Systar system fell away under a dryer and was neglected by everyone. He hence built a time travelling spaceship to make sure he has a future (…ooh, time paradox. Me likey…) but Emmet disagrees and insists on helping his friends which angers Rex enough to push him under the same dryer he was stuck.
Meanwhile, Finn upset about the situation reconstructs the heart he gave Bianca the first time as an apology and they reconcile. The pieces in the boxes are inspired and start moving and build a ship to rescue Emmet.
When Lucy reaches under the dryer, she witnesses Emmet stand up to Rex and since Emmet chose not to transform into him, Rex disappears happy that he has a future. The siblings reconstruct everything together and create the realm of Syspocalypstar where everyone loves together. Their mother watches with delight as they play together and the movie ends with Emmet discovering Lucy to be one of the creators of “Everything is Awesome” song in shock.
Lego has done it again people!!!!. The concept is absolutely beautiful.
As a teenager Finn’s preferences were changing. This is all reflected through the film’s expanse but his sister Bianca saved the gentle and caring part of him which eventually won over his teenage angst.
This part is what will remain true of him as he grows. Only by embracing his true instinctive parts would we evolve into our very best selves. Dang! I wish more people appreciated these simple but sweet messages that are portrayed in the film.
So, we are at the very end of our article and I would like to mention that Lego Universe has 21 more straight to CD movies based on its series and more.
You can stream the movies on Netflix, Amazon prime, YouTube or Google play movies. Let’s hope Lego bricks are able to stop the invasion of the world by technology and that children spend their time building and imagining instead of staring at screens that emit radiation. ( * Fingers crossed for that * ).
They were such a huge part of my childhood, I’m going to keep playing with them time and time again.
